Stretching..

As you get older stretching gets so much more difficult. Its at this stage in life that you wished you had stretched more as a kid. When you see the likes of Bill Wallace still being able to do the box splits and fight at his age it does make you wonder. How do you keep fast and flexible as you get older?

Best Bag Gloves in the world Ever..

Just been trying out the Adidas Speed Gel Bag Gloves and yes they are good. Heavy enough to be able to give a good punishing heavy punch, small enough to be fast and not in the way and the gel and leather covering gives maximum protection for those long bag sessions. Definitely a recommendation from me.

Improving fitness for Martial Arts

This came as an accident as my Fiancée is a fitness instructor so I started going to some of her classes. Out all the non martial arts training that I did in order to improve my stamina, strength and fitness for Sports Karate I have to say that the Les Mills Body Combat and Body Pump are the best. The Body Pump improves strength while the Body Combat improves stamina and fitness while still getting to practise your kicks and punches. Any guys that say that these classes are just for women haven’t done them!!

I used to get bored going to the gym to run and do weights, these classes are like having a personal trainer for a few hours a week.

Martial Art Bag/Rucksack

I have been using the large version of this Adidas Bag for over a year now and have to say it is pretty amazing. Its really strong material, well made with vented side pockets to keep pads fresh and best of all it can either be a holdall or a comfy rucksack. Ideal for running to the Dojo..

Kick Boxing vs Sports Karate

So what the difference between the 2? Do you do Kick Boxing or Karate? 20 years ago it was Sports Karate that everyone was doing, then Kick Boxing started getting very popular and a lot of Sport Karate Clubs started changing their name to Kick Boxing to go with the trend and get the new students looking to do Kick Boxing. Now there seems to be a bit stigma against the name Kick Boxing in that it has no tradition and some clubs can be undisciplined and not respectful. Due to this a lot of the original Karate Clubs have now started to change their names back to Karate/Sport Karate. Nothing has changed, people still train and fight the same way with the same moves it’s just a trend of names…

Nunchaku’s

There are a fantastic range of high quality Nunchuks at Indoor Xtreme’s Martial Arts Store. My favourite being the Graphite Lightweight version. Extremelly fast and fantastically light. I do recommend learning with the Foam Nunchuks first so save those lumps and bruises…

Knuckle protection for Pad Work

20 years of pad work and I never wore Knuckle protection. Yes ever so often you would get those annoying grazes of skin that took ages to heal but over time your knuckle skin would get stronger. What I have started noticing now as I’m getting older is that I can produce more power if I have wraps or gloves as they give more wrist support and you are also not holding back incase you slip ripping the knuckle skin. I have tried a few different protections, wraps, gel wraps and under gloves. Wraps and Gel Wraps take to long to put on and I’m just to lazy. Under gloves are quick to put on and give good support but wear out quick. But spending that little bit more and looking lateralley I have managed to find a fantastic pad glove. The WTF sparring gloves are light strong, give wrist support and cover all the vital areas. Yes they are a Taekwondoe sparring glove but for all us other martial artists they make a fantastic padwork glove.
